"Tribal Beat," original painting, 30" x 48"
This painting was created on natural cotton canvas starting with the crinkly taupe background. I added patterns and designs in many layers until the piece felt balanced and complete.
It has an Earthy, ethnic look that reminds me of African textiles. The title "Tribal Beat" refers to a rhythmic quality of the painting and that all of humanity is one big tribe. We are more alike than we are different, and we all resonate to the singular heartbeat of one planet.
The color palette for this piece came to me in a flash of inspiration -- purples, blues, oranges and gold. The taupe and tiny bit of turquoise were added to flesh out the color scheme.
My passion is creating exciting and dynamic paintings using materials that are as Earth-friendly as possible, given our current circumstances. I use natural, repurposed and upcycled materials for my art.
I rarely pick up a brush and prefer to work spontaeously, making marks using unusual tools. The tools used for this painting include an ice cube tray, bubble wrap, the rim of a cup, a collander, a muffin tin, and spatulas. I also pour, splatter and smear paint to round out my designs.
