Artist Statement

Earth is my home, even though I sometimes feel like I don’t belong here. As such, I am deeply committed to her well-being. I do what I can in my daily life to preserve our planet, including decisions I make about my art.

 

Sustainability is an important part of my artistic practice, and my artwork encompasses painting, fiber art and collage. Because of concerns about the environment, I use natural, repurposed and upcycled materials for my work.

 

My most recent work encompasses themes of longing and belonging, and healing past wounds, both personal and planetary.

 

I’m intrigued by the outcasts of society – the flawed, the imperfect, the rejected, the unwanted, the trash and the waste. I seek to reclaim them in my work and heal the hurts through mending, stitching, weaving, restoration, repair and loving care.

 

My work is a celebration of the earth herself, and the mysteries of life. Much of it is co-created with the earth through alchemical transformations using plants and minerals in conjunction with the elements of soil, water, sun and air along with time. Each piece is a unique glimpse into the inner workings of nature as she performs her magic on the cloth.

 

The finished art is symbolic of our own metamorphosis from unconsciousness to conscious awareness, as we evolve through our healing and become whole.
