"Rubber Meets the Road," original painting, 48" x 36"
What better symbol of modern urban life than the automobile? It takes us where we want to go, and sometimes where we never expected to go.
This painting was inspired by mud tire tracks on the sidewalk. I passed by them every day and hadn't noticed them, until one day they leaped into my field of vision. Upon closer inspection, the patterns of the tracks looked interesting to me, and inspired this work.
I used my car to create this painting by applying paint to one of the tires, and driving over the canvas repeatedly. It takes some experimentation and a lot of starting and stopping of the car to do this well, but I like the results. It's kind of an urban grunge look.
Sustainability is an important part of my artistic practice, and this painting was created using repurposed leftover house paint that would otherwise go to waste.
