"Crossfire," original painting, 48" x 36"
The rich iron oxide patina of this painting is created using rusty pieces of metal placed on wet canvas to create interesting marks. Iron is a grounding element, and the very core of our planet is composed of molten iron. The rebar paintings keep us connected to the Earth plane, have a grounding influence, and evoke a sense of safety, security, stability and well-being.
Rebar is a steel building material used to reinforce concrete. I place the rebar rods on wet canvas and allow them to rust. Developed in layers, the rebar is used to build an intricate web of interlaced lines creating a beautiful patina of texture and depth.
Sustainability is an important part of my artistic practice, and this piece was created using natural materials -- iron oxide on cotton canvas.
